Q
When did you first start bodybuilding?
A
After running the London Marathon in 2002 I felt my body was becoming "stringy" and wobbly. Lots of running had left me with sore knees and a less than pert backside! I started lifting weights seriously and was delighted with the improvements I saw. I am very competitive by nature and wanted to be stronger than the other girls in the gym.
My husband had previously competed (in his 20's) and encouraged me to consider entering a show. I found out about the UKBFF "Stars of Tomorrow" competition and after dieting for 12 weeks, entered my first show in November 2005. I placed 3rd out of 4 girls but loved the experience and felt that I had the genetic potential to improve my placing, so I competed again the following May, placing 2nd and gaining and invite to the British Finals in 2006.
You now compete with the BNBF - why did you change federations?
A
After competing at the UKBFF British Finals, I discovered the BNBF, one of the federations dedicated to natural bodybuilding. As a natural athlete I felt that this was the right place for me to compete alongside other natural girls. The BNBF are a great organisation, run by competitive bodybuilders for the good of the sport and the competitors. Having won my BNBF pro card I now compete with the IFPA, a natural pro federation.
How do your family feel about your bodybuilding career?
A
My husband competed in his 20's and did so again last year, he is very supportive of me and helps with all aspects of my preparation. He has been a personal trainer for 20 years and has a BSc in Nutrition so his help is invaluable.
My sons are 18 and 19 and have often come to watch me compete, they show their friends my photos and are generally very proud of me.
I entered my first pro show in Washington DC in November 2008 and placed 7th; in 2009 I would like to improve that placing and move into the top 5 at a pro show.
I am currently studying Sport and Exercise Science at the University of East London and would love to lecture at some time in the future.
